How I Escape. #1
Work to play. Escape to live.
Many know the struggle of juggling family life, friends, play time and work. Whether you have a 24-7 business or work a 9-5, the principles are the same and everyone needs an escape from time to time.
In Morzine we’re hugely fortunate to have such an amazing landscape to escape into. Here is how Olly, the chief Mountain Maverick makes the most of his work to play approach to life!
“At that point all thoughts are on riding, where to turn, drop, jump.”
“For me, escapism from work and the daily rigours comes from the sports I enjoy.
In the winter this is snowboarding and in the summer my interests turn to mountain biking. Believe me when I say, whilst you’re riding a bike bouncing over rocks at pace, you are focused on the task at hand and all other worries are pushed from your mind. When you reach the bottom of the mountain trails in one piece, that sense of achievement, adventure & relaxation can’t be beaten.
During winter I try as often as I can (with conditions allowing) to get up for an early hike.
Getting on the splitboard at 4 or 5am whilst it’s dark and quiet. Often alone. Hiking uphill for an hour or two is a true feeling of escape.
It’s exercise but not strenuous, and a great time to think undistracted about the day ahead. Then just after sunrise you turn round, adjust the kit and get ready for the descent. At that point all thoughts are on riding, where to turn, drop, jump. Again the mind is clear and only focused on enjoying yourself. There is no better start to the day and we are very fortunate having this landscape to escape into in our backyard!”
