Morzine 3 peaks Challenge raises money for UNICEF
Morzine is surrounded by 3 majestic peaks, Nantaux, Ressachaux and Nyon. If you have visited the town before you will have seen them looming up around the valley, in summer, surrounded by parapenters and in the winter offering beautiful snow capped peaks. This summer see’s Morzine host it’s very own 3 peak challenge in aid of UNICEF.
The picture above shows Nantaux on the far left, Ressachaux in the centre and Nyon on the far right.
The challenge is not a ground breaking idea and has been done for many years in the UK with the national 3 peaks challenge taking place across Scotland, England and Wales and the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge taking in the peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough aiming to undertake the hikes in just 12 hours. There is also the Welsh 3000’s which see’s revellers hiking all the peaks in Wales above 3000 feet and this can be done in 12 or 24 hours. The challenges are tough and certainly need training for making Morzine the perfect place to host it’s own!
The Morzine 3 peaks challenge is open to all who want to join in and will begin at the unearthly hour of 4am on September 27th 2014. The hike will start with the harder peak first being Nantaux and will then move onto Ressachaux and finish with Nyon. The ascent will be a total of 3,500ft vertical gain and the hike will be 25km long. It is also possible to hike to the plateaus of each mountain which is still a huge challenge so don’t be put off if you fancy a go!
This print is the work of local artist Kate Knott showing all the local peaks and their heights.
The finale will take place with a smashing bbq and lots of beer at Hotel L’aubergade, right in the centre of Morzine where you can kick off your hiking boots and recline on the sunny terrace. If you are interested in more information you can have a look at the event page on facebook and please do get in touch to find out accommodation availability at Hote L’aubergade!
